This text aims to provide a bit more background.<\/p><p><strong>Grienden<\/strong><br \/>Traditionally brushwood is harvested from `grienden\u2019: an area, often tidal, in which mainly (pollard) willow and alder dominate the flora. Their branches were harvested manually and collected in bundles. In recent times plantations have been developed to grow the wood on, allowing for much more efficient mechanical harvesting, more control and easier maintenance. Manual harvesting is still done, for the cultivation of existing `grienden\u2019 but also in plantations to select rootstocks for instance.<\/p><p><strong>Constructing fascine mattresse<\/strong><br \/>Fascine mattresses come in two varieties: the `classic\u2019 one and the one based on geotextile. The latter consists of a geotextile base carrying one or more layers of `wieps\u2019 (in the form of a grid if multiple layers are used). A `classic\u2019 mattress consists of brushwood only and are hence more environmentally friendly. This type has a grid of `wieps\u2019 as its base, on top of which alternating one or more layers of brushwood and grids of `wieps\u2019 are placed. The `classic\u2019 version is hence typically\nthinker and more robust than the version based on geotextile. In both cases the production of the mattresses is manual labour.<\/p><p><strong>Sinking fascine mattresses<\/strong><br \/>Normally part of or even the whole fascine mattress will need to rest against the shore under water. In order to bring them to their final location, the mattress is first floated into position. This typically happens by attaching the head of the mattress to a `zinkbalk\u2019, and attaching this `zinkblak\u2019 in turn to a tug possibly aided by one or more pontoons. Once in position, the `zinkbalk\u2019 is gradually lowered to hit the bottom. At this point the head of the mattress is already in place.
